Travelling is a popular pastime; it's exciting and educational to visit different countries and learn about their cultures. People travel abroad for a number of reasons: business trips may require workers to go abroad, while other people simply want to escape the bad weather in Britain and soak up the sun on holiday.

Gap years, voluntary aid work and pilgrimages ensure that many Britons travel abroad every year. However, potential travellers have a lot to consider both before and during their trip. Certain documents, such as passports, are required for international ventures, and holidaymakers are advised to take out travel insurance and adhere to particular rules at airports. This section will explain all the issues you need to consider if you are going overseas.

The Facts...

The number of visits abroad made by UK residents has more than tripled since 1985, to a record 66.4 million.
The most popular holiday destination for Britons is Spain.
According to AXA insurance, about one in ten Britons take four or five holidays a year at a cost of £97.3 billion.
British holidaymakers have lost items costing a total of £1.5 billion abroad during the last three years, according to Direct Line Travel insurance.
According to CreditExpert's latest Personal Credit Index, up to one sixth of British holidaymakers borrow money to pay for their holidays.
According to a Post Office study, 34 per cent of holiday insurance claims are due to people cancelling holidays.
