Tenancy Agreements

About this section

A tenancy agreement is a legal contract which sets out what you (the tenant) and your landlord can expect from one another. It outlines the details, rights and responsibilities of both parties. For example, it would include the length of the agreement and the amount of rent payable. As either individual, it is vital you have some sort of formal arrangement.

The following sections will guide you through the most common types of agreements.
The Facts...
  • Tenancy agreements may be written or oral. Verbal agreements are as legally binding as written ones but obviously harder to prove if there is a discrepancy
  • The three most common tenancies are an assured tenancy, a regulated tenancy and an assured shorthold tenancy
  • The assured shorthold tenancy is the standard letting for tenancies which began on or after 28 February 1997
