About this section

The British are known for their love of animals, and many individuals choose to keep pets domestically as companions in their home. Common choices range from hamsters to cats or dogs, and even reptiles and arachnids have become more popular.

In this section we will explain the Animal Welfare Bill, and what you need to do if you want to take your pet abroad, and list some general advice on your pet’s upkeep and wellbeing:
The Facts...
  • The Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) is a system which allows pet dogs, cats, and ferrets from certain countries to enter the UK without quarantine - providing they meet certain rules
  • The Animal Welfare Act 2006 states that pet owners have a legal responsibility to meet the basic welfare needs of their pets.
  • The minimum age at which a child can buy a pet on their own is 16
  • Under current law, the maximum penalty for neglect and cruelty to an animal is a £20,000 fine and 51 weeks in prison
  • Research carried out for National Pet Month by the Pet Food Manufacturers Association (PFMA) recently revealed that there are approximately 27 million pets in this country
  • 43% of households contain at least one pet
  • The RSPCA rescued 68,531 animals in 2007
  • Animals which are susceptible to rabies are required to spend six months in quarantine before entering the UK unless they satisfy the PETS scheme conditions
