Mental Health

About this section

A mental health problem can be difficult for both the sufferer and their friends and family. There are many conditions that fall into the ‘mental health’ category, but all of them are distressing illnesses which require support and assistance from the right people.

Individuals with mental health problems have certain rights regarding the services they can receive to help them deal with the condition.
If you are concerned about your mental health, or that of a close relative or friend, you should first contact your GP. They will be able to talk through the problems and if necessary prescribe medication or make a referral to a specialist.

You may be able to access the services of community mental health teams, which provide support on a day-to-day basis or when it is needed. Trained professionals within the teams offer counselling and other guidance to help you deal with mental health issues.
They can also offer advice on how to access employment or education, information on financial benefits you may be entitled to, and information on what local facilities are available to you.

The Mental Health Act 1983 covers the assessment, treatment, and the rights of people who have a mental health condition.
