The Facts...
It is estimated that there will be 27.2 million people aged 50 and over by 2031.
Population ageing is primarily the result of sustained low fertility - a low number of births.
Older women outnumber older men. Death rates are higher among men than among women.
Around two-thirds of the population over 75 are women.
From 6 April 2020, the state pension age for women will be 65, the same as for men.
There are over 300,000 people living in nursing or residential care homes in the UK.
