General Advice - England and Wales
Free and impartial legal advice for individuals in England and Wales can be found from the following sources:
- The Government: For citizens of England and Wales the government's Directgov website offers general advice on topical issues such as swine flu, as well as important consumer information on topics such as car tax, having a baby and benefits. The website's Do it online section provides access to government forms and tools which allow you to complete tasks such as paying a court fine, claiming benefits, or finding childcare.
- Community Legal Advice: Residents of England and Wales can access free, confidential and independent legal advice from the Community Legal Advice Directory, which pairs you up with an expert in your local area. You can access the service by calling 0845 345 4 345 between 9:00am and 6:30pm from Monday to Friday, and 9:00am to 12:30pm on Saturdays. You will be charged 4p/minute, but can avoid these by asking CLA to call you back. Whether you need information on clinical negligence, taking action against the Police or on claiming welfare benefits, the body's website can put you in contact with a legal advice expert based in your area.
- Citizens Advice: Free information on legal issues, employment and financial matters - including debt and benefits - is available from the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB). The charity has 426 centres across England and Wales, and also offers access to information via its online Adviceguide. Figures released by CAB last month showed that between April 2008 and March 2009 the service saw two million clients, advised on six million new problems and had 8.8 million hits to its advice website.
- Advice UK: An online portal which connects consumers with free, independent advice centres.
- Multiskulti: Offers translated advice on issues such as employment, immigration, and racism and discrimination in a number of foreign languages – including French, Spanish, Bengali, Chinese and Turkish.
