Death of a Loved One

About this section

Dealing with the death of a loved one can be a traumatic ordeal. Friends and family have the responsibility of informing the relevant organisations, registering the death, obtaining formal documents, and arranging the funeral of the deceased.

When someone dies, there are many decisions and arrangements to be made, whether their passing was expected or not. This is often a difficult task at such a traumatic time, and you may feel you can’t cope. However, knowing exactly what to do can save you an enormous amount of stress when coming to terms with your grief.

The Facts...
  • One of the first things you need to think about when a relative has died is registering their death
  • People are living for longer; the average age at death in the UK is now 81 years for females and 76 years for males
  • It is important to remember to look after the elderly during the winter. January is the month when most deaths occur in the UK
  • Before a death can be formally registered, a medical certificate detailing the cause of death needs to be issued
  • If a death takes place abroad it must be registered according to the law of that country. It may be able to be registered in the UK once it has been reported to the British Consul
  • It is a criminal offence not to register a death
  • Under certain circumstances a coroner may be required to investigate the death of a person through an inquest before it can be registered
  • You normally need to register a person’s death within five days
