About this section
The Civil Partnership Act 2004 came into effect on December 5th, 2005. A civil partnership is a legal union of a same-sex couple which is sanctioned by a civil authority.
It allows homosexual couples to enjoy the same benefits, protections and responsibilities under UK law as heterosexual couples who are married. Information in this section covers the following areas of civil partnerships:

There is a formal process for dissolving partnerships akin to divorce
The Civil Partnership Act 2004 came into force on December 5th, 2005
The first day that couples could form a civil partnership under normal arrangements in England and Wales was 21st December 2005
Civil partnerships enable same-sex couples to obtain legal recognition of their relationship
Civil partnerships give same-sex couples the same legal rights as married heterosexual couples
A civil partnership becomes legal when the registration certificate is signed by both partners; it does not need to be signed as part of a marriage-style ceremony
A civil partnership document has to be signed by both partners in the presence of the registrar, each other and two witnesses
It is estimated that 42,500 homosexual couples will have registered for civil partnerships by 2050
The registration of a civil partnership is unable to take place in premises which are designed or used for religious purposes
