About this section
Providing the support and care for someone who is unable to look after themselves can be extremely time consuming, stressful and a financial strain.
If you are a carer, you may be entitled to
financial assistance
and help with looking after someone who is reliant on you, whether their dependency is through illness, disability or age.
You can request an assessment from your local council to find out what services you are entitled to. Social services will need to discuss:
The help the person you care for needs
The help you are giving
The services your council provide
A carer’s assessment is usually carried out by a social worker. They will explain the support and services that can be provided.
During the assessment, you should try to give them as much information as possible about the impact caring has on you. You may find it helpful to keep a diary of everything you do and how you feel; this might give you a better insight into your personal situation.
If your situation is likely to continue for some time, the social worker should set a review date to see if the help provided is working for you. This is usually on an annual basis, or can be more frequent if your case is more complex.
Once the assessment is complete, the findings will be summarised in a care plan. This will set out the decisions made by social services about whether or not to provide services. The needs identified in the assessment are compared against eligibility criteria. If they match, then your local authority must provide the services to meet those needs.
The types of
help available
to you as a carer will depend on your individual circumstances and your local authority. The main services include:
Help at home
Day care
Break services
Aids and Equipment
Adapting your home
Residential and nursing home care
Carer’s services
Help from your GP or primary care team
Contact your local council to find out about particular services in your area.
